`Zafar Iqbal attacker’s uncle introduced himself as an Awami League leader’

The detained uncle of Foyzur Rahman Faizul, who attacked author and Professor Zafar Iqbal in Sylhet, used to introduce himself as a leader of the ruling Awami League (AL).

It was known that Fazlur Rahman, the uncle of attacker Faizul, is a joint convener of Sunamganj District Kriskak League. However, local AL leaders said he was not a member of the party.

Police detained Fazlur during a drive at Faizul’s Sheikhpara house in Sylhet on Saturday night.

Sources said Fazlur, hailing from Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur, built a house in Sheikhpara and has been living there for four years.

He is a close associate of Awami League’s Sunamganj district unit’s General Secretary Enamul Kabir Emon. The duo was seen together in rallies, meetings and other programs of the party, local leaders said.

However, Emon was not available for comments as his mobile phone was switched off.

Sunamganj District Krishak League’s Member Secretary Bindu Talukar was not available for comment either.

When contacted, former Awami League MP and district Awami League president Alhaj Motiur Rahman said he had no idea about Fazlur’s involvement with the party.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Jalalabad police station’s OC Shafiqul Islam said they detained Fazlur from Sheikhpara, and that he is in police custody.
Police extracted some information from him which is being investigated, OC Shafiqul said.

He also said locals told police that Fazlur is a resident of Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur. He introduced himself to them as an Awami League leader.
