Jamaat Ameer Maqbul, Secretary General Shafiq, 7 others detained

Police detained Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Maqbul Ahmad, its secretary general Shafiqur Rahman and seven other leaders and activists from capital’s Uttara on Monday evening.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) deputy commissioner Nazmul Alam told the media that detectives detained them from a residence in Uattra.

The other leaders include party’s nayeb-e-ameer Mia Golam Parwar, Chittagong city ameer Mohammad Shajahan, secretary Nazrul Islam and Chittagong district (south) unit ameer Zafar Sadeque.

The identity of one of the nine arrestees could not be known immediately.

Jamaat leaders have been taken to DB office at Minto road in the capital.

Jamaat-e-Islami is the key ally of country’s primary opposition political party - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the party has been facing unprecedented repression and crackdown since the incumbent government took the charge in 2008. Already its top 5 leaders have been executed in connection with a false case of crimes against humanity.
