Dr. Taher becomes critically sick inside the prison cell; Jamaat Ameer demands his immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maqbul Ahmad has issued the following statement on 4 April, 2019 urging to release Jamaat’s detained central executive committee member and former lawmaker Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher to facilitate his due treatment.

“Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher is critically ill. On last 20 March, he appeared before the Comilla district court and submitted a bail plea in a false and concocted case filed by the government. The people expected that considering his physical condition, the court would grant him bail. But due to conspiracy of the government, he was sent to jail. As his physical condition deteriorated later, he was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital. He has been suffering critically as his health condition is deteriorating alarmingly. The concerned physicians referred to provide him treatment from PG Hospital. At present, Dr. Taher is receiving treatment in the prison cell of PG Hospital.

Earlier, his kidneys were transplanted in the December of 2017. He has to go through regular medical checkup. His diabetes is out of control and he is suffering from kidney and other medical complications. He is not being treated properly as he is imprisoned. He also needs a personal attendant. Without the help of such an attendant, he cannot take his medicines properly.

Considering his physical conditions, I am urging the concerned authorities to release him immediately in order to ensure his proper medical treatment.
