Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and 20 party alliance’s candidate for Dhaka-15 (Mirpur-Kafrul) constituency Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the lawyers had provided positive instruction and guidance in many crucial periods of the nation. Their historical role also helped us to achieve our independence struggle. Like those previous occasions, they have to play pro-active role once again to secure the voting rights of the people. He also urged the lawyer’s communities to work unitedly to establish a just society.
He said this while addressing a view exchanging meeting with the lawyers about the electioneering of Dhaka-15 constituency in a city auditorium today. Supreme Court Bar Association’s Vice President Advocate Golam Rahman Bhuiyan presided over the meeting. Among others, Jamaat’s central Executive Committee member and Dhaka city North Jamaat Ameer Muhammad Salim Uddin, central working committee member and Dhaka city South Jamaat’s secretary Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, Supreme Court Bar Association’s former Assistant Secretary Advocate Saifur Rahman, Advocate Abdur Razzaq, Advocate Mainuddin, Advocate Shafiqur Rahman, Advocate Zakir Hossain and Advocate Rokon Reza Sheikh and other lawyers were present on the occasion.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman further said that, the nation is going through a critical juncture. We had achieved freedom in order to secure free democracy, equality, social justice and rule of law. But due to failure of the previous government, we are far away from achieving the fruit of the independence. The lawyers in present time are playing key role to resist the government’s crackdown on opposition. The people of the country are deprived now as justice and rule of law is absent in the society now. Democracy and democratic values are being subdued. So, to rescue the nation from this deplorable situation, the lawyers have to play courageous role once again. He urged the lawyers, all other professionals and the general masses to remain altogether under a common platform to ensure the voting rights of the people.
Dr. Shafiq alleged that the opposition candidates cannot do their electoral campaign due to obstruction, intimidation, harassment and false cases, whereas the ruling party men are enjoying the full privileges. Such discriminatory reality has been exposed by the courageous remark of the election commissioner Mahbub Talukder. Jamaat Secretary General claimed that ruling party candidate of Dhaka-15 constituency are conducting false propaganda and demonizing him relentlessly which is clear violation of the electoral rules. He urged the election commission to ensure level-playing field for the candidates, otherwise the election will never be credible, he added.
Complain registered in the Returning Officer’s office:
A complain has been submitted today on behalf of 20 party alliance’s candidate for Dhaka-15 (Mirpur-Kafrul) constituency Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in the office of Returning Officer today. In the complain notes, it is stated that, police have arrested several opposition activists including Ahsan Ullah, Golam Rabbani and Anwar Hossain, while campaigning for the candidate of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ on last 18th December from Senpara of Mirpur. We have appealed earlier for taking action about these arrest drives. However, same drives are still going on. For the sake of fair election, we are expecting your effective measures to stop such harassments.
