Police arrests Chittagong city Jamaat leaders; Professor Mujib protests

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 19 November 2018 protesting and condemning the indefensible arrests of Chittagong city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Alhaj Afsar Uddin Chowdhury and Baizid thana Ameer Md. Zakir Hossen.

“Ahead of the national election, police have arrested Chittagong city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Alhaj Afsar Uddin Chowdhury and Baizid thana Ameer Md. Zakir Hossen to serve the ill-intention of the government. I am vehemently condemning the incident.

As the date of polls is approaching, the torture and repression of the fascist government is increasing alarmingly. The countrymen expected a free, fair and credible election. But instead of creating a congenial atmosphere for such an event, the government has started conspiracies to hold a lopsided and farcical election.

The people of the country expected that government’s oppression would come to an end immediate after the declaration of the poll schedule. But paying no heed to people’s view, the government is plotting to stay in power by using all the state apparatus. I am urging the countrymen to launch mass resistance against all the plots and conspiracies of the government.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop their arrest drives and to release all the detained opposition leaders and activists, particularly of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Chittagong city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Alhaj Afsar Uddin Chowdhury immediately.”
