Police arrests popular Jamaat leaders and public representatives; Professor Mujib condemns

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 8 November 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Chuadanga district Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and Damurhuda Upazila Chairman Maulana Azizur Rahman, Nator district Jamaat's Nayeb-e-Ameer Principal Delwar Hossain  Khan, assistant secretary Professor Siddiqur Rahman, Professor Abdul Khaleq, Gaibandha district’s Sundarganj Upazila Vice-Chairman Abu Solaiman Sarkar Saja, Rajshahi district’s Tanor Upazila’s Mondumala municipality unit Jamaat Ameer Maulana Anisur Rahman and Puthia Upazila’s Jiupara Union’s Jamaat backed chairman Ruhul Amin Sarkar.

“The government is arresting the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir from various places across the country continuously as a part of its conspiracy to stay in office by holding a farcical election, full of rigging and intimidations. Police has arrested 4 popular leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami on 7 November from Chuadanga, Gaibandha and Rajshahi. I am vehemently protesting and condemning police’s ongoing nationwide arrest drive.

These arrestees are very popular and 3 of them are public representative. The government has arrested them because of their popularity. Even the elected public representatives are not spared from the crackdown of the incumbent fascist government.

The government has been plotting conspiracies to stay in power illegally. Ignoring the view of the countrymen and the political parties, they are moving forward to hold a lopsided election. They are executing the conspiracies based on the support of the law enforcement agencies and administration as they know that they will not be able to come back in power through a fair and credible election. I am urging people of all walks to resist this unlawful conspiracy of the government.

Finally, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop their crackdown and arrest drives and to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Chuadanga district Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and Damurhuda Upazila Chairman Maulana Azizur Rahman immediately.
