Barrister Mainul manhandled and assaulted by ruling party goons; Professor Mujib condemns

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 4 November 2018 protesting and condemning the brutal attack on caretaker government’s former advisor, former president of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association and veteran lawyer Barrister Mainul Hosein.

“The thugs of different front organizations of ruling Awami League have attacked Barrister Mainul Hosein today in the court compound while he was produced before the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. The Awami goons physically assaulted him and launched hate processions against him. Such brutalities are beyond imagination in a civilized society. I am vehemently protesting and condemning the incidents.

The government has become ferocious against Barrister Mainul Hosein as he had taken stance against government’s fascism and its conspiracy to hold a farcical election. The government has been trying to demoralize him politically by filing false cases continuously. He has become the worst victim of government’s political vengeance. Today’s merciless attack on Barrister Mainul proved that there is no democracy, rule of law and justice in the country. If the government has minimum respect for democracy, they would not indulge the party goons to attack on a person who is still under police detention. Police also inspired the terrorists by playing a passive role. We have no word to condemn these brutalities.

I am urging the concerned authorities to conduct a judicial investigation into this incident to ensure exemplary punishment of the attackers. I am also calling upon the authorities to withdraw the false cases and to release Barrister Mainul Hosein immediately.”
