Jamaat’s decision to take part in Sylhet mayoral election will not cause any damage to the 20 party alliances, claims Mia Ghulam Parwar

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mia Ghulam Parwar has issued the following statement on 28th July, 2018 responding to a disgraceful reaction which has been expressed in a regular press meet of a partner organization of the 20-party alliance’s partner on 27th July.

“The 20 party alliances had been formed to meet a crucial demand of the nation. Those demands and necessities have not been met rather its relevance and importance has been increased significantly. We have been observing that, some responsible figures of the 20 party alliances are becoming entrapped and making some outrageous comments centering a city poll. Some newspaper also revealed some quotation of a 20 party alliances leader who reportedly claimed that, a major party is enough to alter the government and it does not need any further assistance from any quarter.

That leader also brought the reference of 1991 in forth and claimed that a party had secured victory without the assistance of any other party or forums. We do have doubt whether he really had made such a comment. But if he said so, then we want to remind him that, in 1991 Jamaat-e-Islami had gone above party interest and extended its support to BNP to form government. Such a generous role from a party is really unprecedented.

After the formation of 4 party alliances, it has been expanded to 20 party alliances and since then several local government elections have taken place. In all these elections, alliance partners participated in their own style and such strategy have not damaged the alliance.

City Corporation Election is another form of local government election. So far, amidst the 12 city corporations, Jamaat has taken part in only one mayoral election. Jammat have supported the BNP candidate in rest other city polls and without any condition. Due to such support, in all aspects, Jamaat men have been facing unbearable torture, repression and arrest drive. But nobody said anything about those sacrifices by the Jamaat activists. Furthermore, they are trying to create noise with the Jamaat’s decision of participating in Sylhet city polls.

We would like to call upon the alliance partners and its leaders not to become provoked or not to deliver any comment or address which may harm the national interest.

Like the previous local government elections, we believe our decision of participating Sylhet city polls will not cause any damage to the alliance.

I am urging all the concerned quarters to launch effective movement to free the nation from the clutches of the autocrat and also to continue unified effort for creating a congenial atmosphere to hold a free, fair and credible election.
