Cox’s Bazar city polls marked with unprecedented rigging and intimidations; Jamaat leaders condemn

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Cox’s Bazar district Ameer Maulana Mostafizur Rahman, Secretary and Sadar Upazila Chairman G M Rahimullah have issued a joint statement protesting and condemning the unprecedented vote rigging, fake vote casting and irregularities in today’s Cox’sBazar municipality polls.

In the statement, Jamaat leaders stated that, Awami League has shown utmost disrespect towards the democratic rights of people by conducting massive rigging and irregularities in today’s Cox’sBazar municipality polls. The ruling party has repeated its stigmatic history of vote rigging in this district. Now days, showing disrespect to the voting rights of the people has become a regular habit of Awami League. We are severely condemning such irregularities and demanding re-election in the area. The ruling party’s candidate had gathered goons from outside under the backing of the local administration just to create a dreadful situation in the election area and also to keep general voters away from the voting process. The law enforcers helped them by all means to facilitate these ill-deeds. To secure the party candidate’s victory, Awami League appointed selected presiding officers in all the poll centers. While the administration verbally claimed of holding a fair election which is nothing but a mockery with the people. We are condemning and rejecting this farcical election and calling for a re-election.

A black chapter has been opened in the electoral history of Cox’s Bazar today. The residents of Cox’s Bazar did not see such a heinous travesty before. In this backdrop, we are calling upon the locals to form a broad base unity against Awami League and its unlawful regime.
