Hamidur Rahman Azad sent to jail; Secretary General expresses concern

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 25th July, 2018 expressing deep concern as Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has been sent to jail today.

“on 4th February of 2013, Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad delivered an address in a gathering arranged by Jamaat-e-Islami in a gathering at the Shapla Chattar of the capital. His address was subsequently placed in the tribunal as a charge of contempt of court. Later, International Crimes Tribunal-2 asked him to appear to explain his aforesaid address. But he could not appear before the tribunal in those days due to adverse political situation. Then, the tribunal issued a sentence of 3-month long imprisonment and 3 thousand taka fine against him.

Showing respect towards the law and the judiciary, Hamidur Rahman Azad appeared and surrendered before the tribunal today. He also filed a bail plea in the Supreme Court against the tribunal’s order. But the tribunal denied his bail plea and sent him to jail.

People expected that Mr. Hamidur Rahman Azad’s bail plea would be granted. As he surrendered before the court spontaneously, so he is supposed to be freed. But we are surprised and shocked as his bail application was denied. We hope that Mr. Hamidur Rahman Azad would be released soon and will come back again to the people.
