Barapukuria coal scam; Secretary General demands stern punishment of the looters

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 25th July, 2018 expressing deep concern over mysterious disappearance of 1.45 tonnes coal from Dinajpur district’s Barapukuria coal mine in recent times.

“I am expressing my deep concern over the mysterious disappearance of 1.45 tonnes coal from Dinajpur’s Barapukuria Coal Mine. This incident substantiates the ongoing massive corruption and looting nationwide. The countrymen are also worried in this situation.

Anti-Corruption Commission already found evidences of corruption in this incident following a primary investigation. Nineteen former and current officials of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) including its managing director have been sued as well. In one side, investigation is going on while on the other, a conspiracy is being hatched to conceal this incident as system loss. All concerned sections should be remained alert so that no one can conceal this scam by any means.

Meanwhile, the Northern region of the country is experiencing unbearable power crisis as the power generation of Barapukuria 525MW Power Plant, a coal-fired power plant run by Bangladesh Power Development Board has been closed due to coal shortages. This crisis must be resolved shortly.

Since the incumbent government came into the office, one after one scam including capital market scam, money stolen from the vault of central bank, gold scam and the latest incident of coal disappearance have been revealed which have created suspicion, question and panic among the people. The fellow citizens are worried thinking what scam is next. There is no alternative but launching a mass resistance and forming a broad base unity among the patriotic political parties, civil societies and the general masses if we want to rescue our nation from ongoing trend of looting and corruption.

I am urging the concerned authorities to bring all the vested quarters to the book who were involved with the coal disappearance scam in order to ensure their stern punishment.”
