Chhatra League cadres attack teachers, students supporting quota reform; Secretary General condemns

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 15th July, 2018 condemning ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League activist’s attack and assaults on the teachers and students during a human chain programme demanding release of arrested students, trial of those who attacked student demonstrators, and reform in quota in public services.

“It is really painful and regrettable that once again some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists today assaulted some students and teachers of Dhaka University and foiled their human chain programme demanding immediate release of the quota reformists who are now in jail. I am vehemently condemning the incident.

The pro-ruling party student activists not only assaulted the agitating students and teachers but also vandalised the phone and camera of the journalists. This incident again exposed their fascist face. This attack of the ruling party cadres proved that the government is not sincere at all about reforming the existing quota system. The Prime Minister’s commitment in this regard is nothing but a time killing strategy.

The government wants to foil the ongoing student movement by arresting the agitating leaders, keeping them behind the bar and also by taking them in the police remand. The authority is trying to adopt ill-tactics just to continue the existing discriminatory quota system.

I am urging the concerned authorities to give up these intentional tactics and to reform the quota system as per the demand of the protesting students in order to resolve the ongoing crisis. I am also calling upon the authorities to arrest the attackers for ensuring their due punishment and simultaneously to release all the protesting students immediately.
