Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Maulana A N M Shamsul Islam has issued the following statement on 12th June, 2018 urging the government to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Jamaat Ameer Maqbul Ahmad before the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“The government has arrested Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maqbul Ahmad on 9th October of 2017 and since then he is being kept behind the bar. Right now, he is 79 and suffering from various old age complications including diabetes. The government has also kept Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and world renowned preacher of Quran Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Abdus Subhan and Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam inside the prison for 8 years in connection with the false allegation of so called crimes against humanity.
Some unidentified people claiming themselves as law enforcers have picked up Jamaat’s Ex-Ameer Professor Ghulam Azam’s son and former Brigadier General Abdullahil Aman Azmi, and party’s Ex-Executive Committee member Shaheed Mir Quasem Ali’s son and Bangladesh Supreme Court’s lawyer Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman in August of 2016. Till now they are traceless and their families are passing days amidst extreme worries and tensions as they know nothing about the whereabouts of these two abducted persons. The families are just waiting and waiting for days after days. Such a mysterious role of the government is fully inhuman. I am calling upon the government to return them back immediately so that they can celebrate upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr with their friends and families.
The government has also caused sufferings to thousands of activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir by imprisoning them for many days. Even the authority has arrested hundreds of Jamaat and Chhatarshibir activists in this holy month of Ramadan. Their families and relatives are also counting days with severe tensions and thoughts.
In this backdrop, I am urging the government to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Jamaat Ameer Maqbul Ahmad on humanitarian ground before the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr so that they can celebrate the occasion with happiness and joy.
