40 labour leaders and activists arrested from the capital; Secretary General demands immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 12th May, 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 40 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Sramik Kollan Federation including its central General Secretary Professor Harunur Rashid, central organizing secretary Alamgir Hasan Raju and Central Office Secretary Abul Hashem from the annual conference of Bangladesh Rickshaw Sramik Oikko Federation held in Mirpur of the capital.

“Bangladesh Sramik Kollan Federation and Bangladesh Rickshaw Sramik Oikko Federation are two registered labour organization. These two organizations have been working for the benefit and welfare of the labour communities. But regrettably the government arrested the central and grassroots level leaders and activists of these two organizations from the annual conference of Bangladesh Rickshaw Sramik Oikko Federation and as such once again it is proved that this government does not believe in democracy. It is also proved that this government does not care about being accountable to the people. This government has been detached fully from the mass peoples. At the same time, by carrying out today’s arrest drive, they have foiled the labour rights severely.

I am condemning such tyrannical act of the government and demanding immediate release of the labour leaders. Otherwise, the labour communities will form strong resistance against such oppressions of the government.
