Crackdown continues against the opposition men since the postponement of Gazipur city Polls; Secretary General condemns

The authority has postponed the Gazipur City Corporation polls on last 6th May and since then many leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat and 20 party alliances have been arrested. False cases have been filed as well against 103 persons in particular and another 150 anonymous under special power act. Protesting and condemning all such actions and demanding immediate release of all the detainees, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 8th May, 2018.

“The government has arrested significant number of leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat and 20 party alliances from Gazipur and kept them behind the bar in connection with some false cases under special power act just to harass them politically. I am severely condemning such wrongful activities of the government.

The government realised the certain defeat of ruling party’s candidate when they witnessed local people’s intense support and unified effort to secure the victory of the 20 party alliances’s nominated candidate. As a result, they postponed Gazipur City Corporation election for 3 months. In the wake of such postponement, 20 party alliance’s mayoral candidate arranged a press conference. While the leaders and activists of the 20 party alliances were coming back from that press conference, police arrested many of them without any charge and lodged false cases against the detainees under special power act. The detainees are charged with the allegation of creating anarchy and violence, which are completely false and concocted. They do not have any nexus with the anarchic activities.

Earlier, police had arrested Gazipur City Jamaat Ameer Principal S M Sanaullah and many others while conducting the electoral campaign. Losing mass support, the government is making a ploy to impose fascism upon the nation. Even the government is not allowing the 20 party alliances to hold procession and rallies in a bid to bar the people from forming resistances against the fascist rule of the government. They are also making manoeuvres to postpone the elections just to keep peoples away from casting votes. The government is also accusing the 20 party alliances of creating anarchy intentionally. Under the circumstances, everybody has to be united irrespective of their political identities against the misrule of the incumbent government.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop conspiracies, to withdraw false cases which have been filed against the leaders and activists of 20 party alliances in Gazipur district and also to release all the detainees immediately.”
