Gazipur City Corporation election postponed for 3 months; Acting Ameer expresses concern

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former member of the Parliament Maulana A N M Shamsul Islam has issued the following statement on 7th May, 2018 expressing deep concern as the authorities, at the last moment of electoral campaign, has postponed Gazipur City Corporation for 3 months.

“The government’s ill-intention has been exposed as the election of Gazipur City Corporation has been postponed for 3 months. We are expressing our deep concern in this regard.

Earlier, the government took initiative to postpone the Dhaka City North Corporation Election after they had realised that there is no chance of victory for the ruling party nominated candidates. They have taken the same step this time again to postpone Gazipur City Polls for 3 months by filing a writ petition by a ruling party leader. We are condemning such ploy of the government and expressing our deep resentment. The election commission’s role in this regard is also repulsive and regrettable. This incident proved once again that fair and credible national election is not possible under the current regime and the incumbent election commission.

We are calling upon the concerned authorities to give up conspiracies and to hold Gazipur City Corporation election immediately.”
