Meherpur district Jamaat leaders including elected Upazila Vice Chairman arrested; Rafiqul Islam Khan condemns

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 4th May, 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 7 members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Meherpur district unit including Gangni Upazila Jamaat Ameer Dr. Rabiul Islam, Meherpur Municipality unit Jamaat Ameer and Meherpur Sadar Upazila’s Vice Chairman Maulana Mahbub Ul-Alam from an in-house meeting, held in the house Abdur Rahim, a resident of Anandabas village of Gangni Upazila.

“Police has arrested the grassroots level leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami unlawfully just to harass them politically. I am vehemently protesting and condemning such arrest incident.

No specific allegations are there against the detained Jamaat members. Police has arrested them in connection with some false and manipulated allegations. Meherpur Sadar Upazila’s Vice Chairman, noted religious leader and popular figure Maulana Mahbub Ul-Alam is also among the detainees. The authority has arrested him in order to deprive the peoples from getting his service. Even the elected public representatives are not spared from the harassment of the government. Such activities of the government are really regrettable.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to release all the detained members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami immediately.
