Police arrested several from a prayer program held in Hamidur Rahman Azad’s house; Secretary General condemns

A prayer program was arranged in the village residence of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad, situated in Kutubdia Upazila of the Cox’sBazar district on 29th April for his missing mother. After the program, the guests were taking their food. At that stage, huge number of law enforcers unlawfully cordoned his house and arrested the guests of the program including the elder brother of Mr. Hamidur Rahman Azad.

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 30th April, 2018 condemning the such arrest drive and claimed that it is totally inhuman move from the law enforcers as they detained peoples from a prayer program.

“I am vehemently protesting and condemning the incident. It should be mentioned that on 29th April of 1991, many people including the mother of Hamidur Rahman Azad were floated away during the disastrous cyclones and upper tides, which had taken place over greater Chittagong and Cox’sBazar district. Marking the day, a prayer program was arranged in the village residence of Hamidur Rahman Azad. Following the program, when the guests were taking their foods, police cordoned the house and arrested the elder brother of Hamidur Rahman Azad, neighbouring religious scholars, several Quran-e-Hafiz and some orphan students.

We along with the peoples of Cox’sBazar are deeply worried and shocked at these arrest drive. The government has committed a wrong task as they violated the religious rights of the peoples by arresting peoples from a prayer program. Such activities from a government of a Muslim country are totally unexpected. After these brutal actions, this government should not talk anymore about protecting religious rights of the peoples.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities not to harass the peoples who had been detained from the house of Hamidur Rahman Azad and demanding their release immediately.”
