45 Jamaat men including Gazipur city Ameer arrested; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 28th April, 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 45 Jamaat leaders and activists from Gazipur including Gazipur city Jamaat Ameer Principal S M Sanaullah from an electoral program in favour of the 20 party alliance’s mayoral candidate for the upcoming Gazipur city Corporation election.

“The arrest of 45 Jamaat leaders and activists including Gazipur city Jamaat Ameer Principal S M Sanaullah from an electoral program of Gazipur city mayoral candidate is politically motivated and ill-intentional. I am vehemently protesting and condemning the incident.

This arrest incident proved that no congenial atmosphere is prevailing to hold a free, fair and credible election in Gazipur. Jamaat members and activists have been arrested just to ensure the victory of the ruling party mayoral candidate by any means.

The government is destroying the electoral atmosphere by arresting the 20 party leaders and activists unlawfully as they are in fear of certain defeat in the upcoming elections. This scenario also indicates that the government is plotting conspiracies to hold a lopsided election as per their whims. I am urging all corners to stand against the government’s conspiracy.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Gazipur city Jamaat Ameer Principal S M Sanaullah immediately.”
