Massive violence and irregularities stigmatized local government election; Secretary General expresses concern

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 30th March, 2018 expressing deep concern as the local government election of different levels held at 133 electoral constituencies on 29th March amid massive irregularities including fake vote casting, seizing poll centres and sporadic violence of the ruling Awami League miscreants, which left one Jubo Dal leader killed in Ghatail of the Tangail district.

“Awami League backed hooligans have carried out massive irregularities in the local government election held at 133 electoral constituencies on 29th March. This election is nothing but a repetition of farce and widespread violence as it had happened in all similar occasions during the tenure of the present government. This election once again proved that fair and credible election is not possible under the current regime and its subservient election commission.

In the election, held on 29th March, Awami League leaders and activists, like their natural habit, adopted the same tactics of violence and terrorism to secure the victory of the party backed candidates. In many occasions, the law enforcers, presiding officers and the polling officers have played role almost like the associate of the Awami goons. Several photographs of Awami League terrorists with arms and other weapons have been published in the national dailies. But observing all these ill-activities, the election commission did not take any preventive measures. Rather they assisted the ruling party terrorists by all means. These incidents also substantiated that there is no difference at all between the previous controversial election commission and the incumbent one.

The controversial local government election of 29th March also proved that, for a free, fair and credible election, there is no alternative but a non-party caretaker government. I am urging the countrymen to form broad base unity to press this justified demand.”
