Khaleda Zia is being kept as ordinary prisoner and without division facilities; Acting Ameer expresses concern

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 11th February, 2018 expressing deep concern as BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has not been awarded with division facilities and has been kept in a isolated room in an abandoned jail like an ordinary prisoner.

Like the countrymen, we are also worried and deeply concerned as BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has not been awarded with division facilities. Rather she is being kept in a isolated room in an abandoned jail like an ordinary prisoner. According to the jail code, she is clearly entitled to receive division facilities. But depriving her from due facilities, the government is harassing and oppressing her. We are aggrieved and disheartened with the inhuman approach of the authorities towards a widow of 73 years.

Earlier the government has declared the prison of Nazimuddin road abandoned as it is no more suitable to accommodate peoples. Since then, this place has not been used as jail. All the prisoners of this jail had been transferred to Keraniganj central jail and it is an abandoned place. By keeping former Prime Minister in such an abandoned place, the government has demonstrated unprecedented inhumanity.

Begum Khaleda Zia is the chairperson of BNP, one of Bangladesh's largest political parties. She has been elected as the Prime Minister for several times. The initiatives, which the government is taking against her is nothing but its political vengeance. Such a brutal role can never be expected in a civilised society. If the government had minimum trust on democracy and rule of law, they can not behave so brutally. This government has come into power through a voter less, farcical election and through such actions, they have exposed their inclination towards fascism.

By showing such inhumanity towards Begum Khaleda Zia, the government has launched a new black chapter and its consequence will never be worthy.

I am urging the concerned authorities to give up the path of vindictive politics and to provide all due facilities to Begum Khaleda Zia considering her a VIP prisoner immediately.
