Panchagarh district Jamaat Ameer and several hundred activists arrested; Acting Ameer protests

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former member of the Parliament Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 7th February, 2018 protesting and condemning the arrest of Jamaat’s Panchagarh district Ameer and former Upazila Chairman Maulana Abdul Khaleq and also criticizing the similar nationwide ongoing massive arrest drives against the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami.

“Police has arrested Jamaat’s Panchagarh district Ameer and former Upazila Chairman Maulana Abdul Khaleq and arrested many others during a massive arrest drive on 7th February. This crackdown is politically motivated and ill-intentional. I am severely protesting and condemning such incident.

The government is continuing its massive arrest drive against the opposition men, particularly against the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir just to boost up its tyrannical rule. In last 7 days, police arrested 630 workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir from different places across the country. News of similar arrest is frequently coming. Right now, the prisons and the jails are accommodating unbearable number of prisoners, which are almost double to its capacity. The oppression and torture of the government has exceeded all the limits. The government is plotting conspiracy to hold a farcical election just to stay in power unlawfully. I am urging the countrymen to take stand against such conspiracies of the government.

I am again calling upon the concerned authorities to stop arrest drive and to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir including Jamaat’s Panchagarh district Ameer and former Upazila Chairman Maulana Abdul Khaleq immediately.”
