Government bans procession in the capital on 8th February; Acting Ameer condemns

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 6th February, 2018 protesting and condemning the government’s decision to impose ban on procession and rallies in Dhaka on 8th February from 4am.

“With this decree, the government has violated the constitution and demonstrated extreme level of humiliation towards the fundamental rights of the people. Article 36, 37 and 38 of the constitution ensures rights of the citizens to hold rallies, processions and free movement. By imposing ban on procession on 8th February, the government clearly violates the constitution.

Government has undertaken such decision as they do not believe in public rights. Such directive of the government is a worst example of government’s endeavour to launch one party rule. The government is afraid of mass procession as they became detached from the general masses. The government think that they can deprive the citizens from their rights by dint of force. But they are totally wrong. No tyrannical ruler could subdue the people. Almighty Allah relaxes a tyrant for a while, but makes His ultimate decision, when the tyrant reaches its maximum limit of offence. The activities of the present government indicate that they are gradually moving towards the ultimate decision of Almighty Allah.

11th National Parliament election is scheduled to be held soon. Apprehending party’s massive collapse in that election, the government is plotting conspiracy to keep the citizens away from their rights to cast votes. The government is inclined to create such an environment, which would compel the opposition not to take part in the general election. Government mulls to grab state office by holding a farcical election like 5th January. But the countrymen will not let them to execute such an ill effort. The government has paved the way of its own downfall by imposing ban on the processions and rallies of the opposition quarters.

We hope that the concerned authorities will show genuine respect towards the constitutionally secured fundamental rights of the people and will repeal its decision to impose ban on procession in a bid to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a free, fair, credible and participatory election.”
