Two elected Vice-Chairmen arrested from Chandpur and Kurigram; Acting Secretary General demands immediate release

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 6th February, 2018 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of Chandpur Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman and local Jamaat leader Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan and Kurigram Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman Maulana Habibur Rahman.

“The government has unjustifiably arrested Chandpur Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman and local Jamaat leader Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan and Kurigram Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman Maulana Habibur Rahman. I am severely protesting and condemning the incident.

The government is creating panic among the countrymen by arresting the opposition men particularly the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in last couple of days. Even the elected public representatives are not spared from the oppression of this tyrannical government. The government is unlawfully detaining them as the authority has become afraid of their growing popularities.

Government is also plotting conspiracy to stay in power by creating panic of arrest drive and brutal repression. Such initiatives of the government exposed their autocratic face once again. All the oppressive regimes try to stay in office by conducting crackdown against the general masses. But in all cases, ultimately the general peoples win and the tyrants collapse.

Under the circumstances, I am urging the authorities concerned to stop repression and torture and to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Chandpur Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman Advocate Mohammad Shahjahan and Kurigram Sadar Upazila’s Vice-Chairman Maulana Habibur Rahman immediately.”
