Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former member of the Parliament Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 5th February, 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 11 leaders and activists of Jamat-e-Islami including Noakhali district Ameer Maulana Alauddin, Laxmipur district’s Kamalnagar Upazila Ameer Dr. Nuruddin Mahmud and Ramganj municipality unit secretary Nazmul Hasan Patwari.
“Police has arrested 11 leaders and activists of Jamat-e-Islami including Noakhali district Ameer Maulana Alauddin, Laxmipur district’s Kamalnagar Upazila Ameer Dr. Nuruddin Mahmud and Ramganj municipality unit secretary Nazmul Hasan Patwari with an ill intention to harass them politically. I am severely protesting this arrest drive.
We are observing with great concern that the police has been arresting the opposition activists, particularly the leaders and members of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir from various places across the country for last couple of days. The government has become completely detached from the general masses and started massive arrest drive nationwide in order to linger its tyrannical rule. The government is conducting a major crackdown against the opposition men in a bid to push the nation towards anarchy.
The government in one side has started its electoral campaign, while on the other it is trying to stay in office forcefully by oppressing the opponent forces. Such a dual role of the government clearly proves that they do not want a free, fair, credible and participatory election at all. This is why; they are busy in making conspiracy to stay in power by holding a unilateral farcical election. The incumbent government has been detaining and torturing the Jamaat men for years. I just want to remind the government that, many authorities in earlier era had tortured the dissidents to prolong their tenure, but ultimately they experienced a fatal consequence. The present authoritarian government has to face the same worst experience.
In this backdrop, I am urging the concerned authorities to stop repression and crackdown and to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Noakhali district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Alauddin immediately.”
