Elected Upazila Chairman re-arrested in Rangpur; 11 female activists detained from Rajshahi

Rafiqul Islam Khan calls to raise voice against government’s brutal oppressions nationwide

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 7th December, 2017 protesting and condemning the re-arrest of Rangpur district’s Mithapukur Upazila council’s elected Chairman Professor Ghulam Rabbani from Rangpur jail gate and similar unjustifiable arrest of 11 female activists from Rajshahi city.

“The government’s tyrannical face has been exposed once again as they re-arrested Rangpur district’s Mithapukur Upazila council’s elected Chairman and local Jamaat leader Professor Ghulam Rabbani from the Rangpur jail gate premise though he had secured bail in all the cases filed against him. Similarly, by arresting 11 female activists, the government has disclosed its barbaric characteristic one more time.

Rangpur district’s Mithapukur Upazila council’s elected Chairman and local Jamaat leader Professor Ghulam Rabbani is a popular leader and noted academician. The government has shown its utmost disrespect towards the law by re-arresting him from the jail gate despite he had obtained bail in all the false cases. This incident proved that the incumbent government is not respectful at all towards the law and the judiciary. The government could not make such ill-efforts if they were elected in true sense.

In another incident, police has unreasonably arrested 11 female activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including party member Mostari Begum from Belghoria under Motihar thana in Rajshahi city. They were discussing some Islamic issues in a house of Belghoria, owned by a local resident namely Mir Hossen.  No subversive or anti-national or anti-government issue was discussed in that meeting. They were holding the program just to enlighten people about Islam. I am calling upon the countrymen to raise voice against such undemocratic activities of the incumbent autocratic government.

I am also urging the authorities concerned to release all the detained male and female activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Rangpur district’s Mithapukur Upazila council’s elected Chairman and local Jamaat leader Professor Ghulam Rabbani and Rajshahi city unit Jamaat’s member Mostari Begum immediately.”
