Arrest warrant issued against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia; Acting Ameer protests

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 1st December, 2017 protesting the issuance of arrest warrant against the 20 party alliance leader, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

“Arrest warrant has been issued as per the instructions of the government against the 20 party alliance leader, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in order to secure it’s ill-political interest.

The lawyers of Begum Khaleda Zia have repeatedly said that she could not attend the court session due to general strike which had been called and observed by some left wing parties. In the past, there was a tradition of discontinuity of the court proceedings if strike is called by the political parties to press any national demand. But this time, the honourable court paid no heed to such statements of the lawyers and subsequently issued arrest warrant against the former Prime Minister. By such move, Begum Khaleda Zia has become the victim of political harassment. The government is actually harassing her by all means.

Former Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, or the political leaders and activists, nobody is spared from government’s political vendetta. We are calling upon the concerned authorities to stop harassing Begum Khaleda Zia and other opposition leaders. We are also urging them to withdraw the arrest warrant, issued against Begum Khaleda Zia, immediately.”
