Police arrests Jhinaidah district Jamaat leader and elected Upazila Chairman; Rafiqul Islam Khan protests

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 27th November, 2017 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Jhinaidah district’s Kotchandpur Upazila Jamaat Ameer and Upazila Council’s elected Chairman Maulana Tajul Islam from his house on 26th November noon.

“Police has unjustifiably arrested Jhinaidah district’s Kotchandpur Upazila Jamaat Ameer and Upazila Council’s elected Chairman Maulana Tajul Islam without any specific reason from his house on 26th November noon. He has become the victim of government’s vengeance.

Maulana Tajul Islam is a popular Islamic figure and philanthropist. The government has expelled him from the office of the Upazila council chairman as they became envious of his popularity. After such unlawful expulsion, he has been arrested as well which is amount to severe oppression against him. Such an unjust behaviour with an elected public representative proved that this government do not believe in democracy and rule of law.

Such a repression against a public representative is beyond imagination in any civilized democratic society. I am calling upon my fellow citizens to raise voice against the torture and suppression of the government.

Besides, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami including Maulana Tajul Islam immediately.”
