Jamaat Ameer’s physical condition may deteriorate during police remand; Professor Mujib calls for ensuring due medical treatment

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and ex-lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 20th October, 2017 demanding immediate release of Jamaat Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and all the detained central leaders and also to take necessary steps for the medical treatment of Jamaat Ameer.

“Maqbul Ahmad is now at his 80. He has been suffering from various diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiac diseases. He cannot seat or stand straight because of his severe back pain. His physical condition is deteriorating alarmingly. Particularly, following his arrest on 9th October, police has been produced before the court and now harassing him in the name of interrogation and police remand for consecutive 10 days. He has become severely sick because of such remand. His family also expressed deep concern as there is huge possibility of deteriorating his diabetes, blood pressure and back pain status. He was used to take therapy regularly. But now his physical condition may worsen as there is no privilege of arranging therapy for him.

By arresting an old aged peoples and taking him into police remand, government has seized his fundamental rights. The government also showed their disrespect towards his constitutional rights by depriving him from proper medical treatment. It is basic right of every citizen to enjoy the facilities of medical treatment.

In this backdrop, proper steps must be taken to ensure due medical treatment for Mr. Maqbul Ahmad. We are demanding to ensure his medical treatment and the demand of all detained central leaders immediately.”
