Jamaat leader killed in Satkhira by police torture; Secretary General demands judicial investigation

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 17th September, 2017 protesting and condemning the murder incident of Satkhira district’s Kolaroa Upazila’s Hothatganj Dakhil Madrasa’s Super and Kathonda Ward Jamaat President Maulana Saidur Rahman, who has been killed by the police forces through brutal torture.

“I am calling for judicial probe into the murder incident of Satkhira district’s Kolaroa Upazila’s Hothatganj Dakhil Madrasa’s Super and Kathonda Ward Jamaat President Maulana Saidur Rahman, who has been killed by the police forces through brutal torture. I am also pressing the demand of exemplary punishment for those personnel who were involved with this brutal murder incident.

Police arrested Maulana Saidur Rahman from his house on last 14th September at midnight. They also demanded 0.1 million taka from detained Saidur Rahman. As he failed to pay that money, the police forces assaulted and beat him mercilessly. They tore his dress and took him away in that condition. Later, police produced him before the court on 15th September evening and the court subsequently sent him to jail. But he became severely sick on that midnight (15th September) and was admitted into Satkhira Sadar hospital. Finally he died in that hospital on 16th September at 4 a.m. while undergoing treatment. ("We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.")

I am calling for judicial probe into the incident of beaten to death of Maulana Saidur Rahman. Besides, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to bring the murderers to the book and to ensure their exemplary punishment.

I am praying to Almighty Allah to accept Maulana Saidur Rahman as a valiant martyr. I am also extending sympathy to the mournful family of Maulana Saidur Rahman and praying to Allah for them so that they can tolerate this grave shock.”
