Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 11 December 2023 remembering the contributions of Jamaat’s former Assistant Secretary General, noted journalist, and intellectual Abdul Quader Molla.

“Former Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, noted journalist and intellectual Abdul Quader Molla has played an active role in establishing Islamic society in Bangladesh till his last breath. As a politician, author, academician, and researcher, he played a pivotal role for the development of the nation. He was a member of the liaison committee during the anti-autocracy movement of the 90s. He was very active in establishing democracy, rule of law, voting, and human rights. As an author and intellectual, he tried to revive the good conscience of the people.

The government arrested him on 13 July 2010 in connection with a political case and later, sued a case in the international crime’s tribunal. The tribunal had declared life-term imprisonment against him. Then, the government amended the law to file an appeal against the tribunal verdict to meet the demand of the Gono Jagoron Mancha, a platform that had been launched under the direct backing of the government. Based on that amended law, he was sentenced to the death penalty. Abdul Quader Molla did not get the chance to file a review plea against the verdict of the appellate division. Even before the full verdict was published, the authority had executed him at 10.0 pm on 12 December, 2013. One and a half years after his execution, the detailed verdict of the dismissal of his review plea was published. All these incidents proved how much farce and travesties he had faced in the name of justice!

Just before the execution, Shaheed Abdul Quader Molla said that “the government is executing me unjustifiably. Every single drop of my blood will inspire the leaders and activists of the Islamic movement in this country. He also urged his fellow leaders and activists to take revenge for his unjust murder by establishing Islam in Bangladesh.

I am remembering his contributions to the Islamic movement and pray to Allah for accepting him as a martyr. Besides, I am calling upon the manpower, well-wishers, admirers, supporters, and fellow countrymen to implement his dream of establishing an Islamic society.
