Government has arrested BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir unlawfully, alleges Acting Ameer

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 29th October 2023 protesting the unlawful arrest of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

“The government has unlawfully arrested BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to foil the ongoing movement. No option is left for the nation as the oppression of the government has exceeded all limits. The government has become reckless watching the huge presence in the opposition’s rallies and processions. This is why, they are arresting opposition leaders and activists indiscriminately. They have arrested BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as a part of the same strategy. I am vehemently condemning this arrest incident and demand immediate release of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

In another statement, Acting Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman said, the government has arrested almost 400 party leaders and activists in last two days including Moulovi Bazar district’s Acting Ameer Maulana Abdur Rahman. Police also arrested Khulna district Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Kabirul Islam from his working place. No previous government could foil the movement by conducting oppression and torture and the incumbent will not be able to do that as well. I am condemning these arrest incidents severely.

The government is arresting general people even like tourists, pedestrians and labors. They have turned the entire country into a giant prison. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal admitted couple of days back that, the jails of the country are equipped several times more than its capacity. So, the prisoners are not getting adequate food, water and they are leading deplorable lives. A country cannot function in such a way.

Acting Ameer said, the people are demanding for immediate dismissal of the parliament and hand over of power to the caretaker government in order to hold a free, fair and credible election. I am urging the government to accept the demand and to free the nation from the existing crisis. I am urging the government to release all detained Jamaat and Chhatrashibir activists including Moulovi Bazar district’s Acting Ameer Maulana Abdur Rahman immediately.
