Flood situation deteriorates in Chittagong city, Satkania and Cox’s Bazar; Acting Ameer expresses concern

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 9th August 2023 expressing deep concern over the existing flood situation of the country as around a million people became waterlogged and at least 7 people killed in a severe flood and landslides which are taking place in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban.

Because of the continuous flow of the flood water, road communication between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar became disconnected. Minor landslides have taken place in more than 350 places. All educational institutions have been declared closed in Chittagong city and other flood affected districts due to critical flood situation. 5 people have been killed so far in landslides. Around a million people including 300 tourists became water-logged already. Rescue operations should be carried out immediately to rescue the stranded people.

The sufferings became unbearable in Chittagong city because of the waterlogging crisis. Transportation is halted inside the city. The incumbent government has spent 7 thousand crore taka so far but could not free the port city from such deplorable waterlogging condition. This is an all-out failure of the government.

Waterlogged people are passing days in starvation. There are severe scarcities of pure drinking water, food and other essentials. I am urging the government to rescue the stranded people and also to send emergency relief in the flood affected areas. Besides, I am calling upon the leaders and activists of the locality and the affluent corners to take stand by the side of the flood victims.

I am praying for the departed souls who have been killed in flood and extending deep sympathy to their mournful families.
