Acting Ameer condemns police’s obstacles and arrest drives; calls the government to hand over power immediately

Appreciates countrymen’s participation in Jamaat declared processions

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 6th August 2023 protesting and condemning the police’s obstruction and barriers against processions of Jamaat-e-Islami in divisional cities, subsequent arrests and harassment and simultaneously hailing the countrymen and the party leaders and activists for making the pre-declared programs successful.

Police has created obstruction and also attacked the processions of Jamaat-e-Islami in divisional cities on 6th August. Police charged baton in the processions of Comilla city Jamaat and arrested 7 from the spot. Police also arrested Satkhira city secretary Khorshed Alam, 9 from various thana under Dhaka north city and 14 from Rajshahi. We are condemning the arrest, harassment and repression of the law enforcers. Despite all those obstructions and oppressions, Jamaat’s programs have been implemented successfully and this is why, I am sincerely thanking the countrymen and Jamaat leaders and activists.

Jamaat has applied to DMP seeking assistance in holding rally in Suhrawardi Udyan of the capital. But as the administration did not cooperate so the party declared protest demonstration in all divisional cities. It is the fundamental right of an organization to hold rallies and processions. No one has right to intervene those rights. But the countrymen are observing with deep concern, despite Jamaat’s repeated appeal seeking assistance, the administration are not responding positively. Instead of providing assistance, they are arresting Jamaat men and harassing in many ways. But the movement of the people can never be subdued by carrying out torture, arrest drive and oppression.

We are urging the government to step down and to hand over power to a caretaker government in order to hold a free, fair and credible election and also for restoring peace and comfortable environment in the country.
