Acting Ameer condemns nationwide mass arrests; terms police's attacks on the opposition leaders as 'regrettable'

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 29th July 2023 protesting and condemning the initiatives of obstructing the programs of the opposition parties including Jamaat-e-Islami, baton charges of the policemen, attacks upon the political leaders, nass arrest and continuous raids into the houses and establishments of the opposition leaders and activists.

Instead of providing assistance for holding peaceful rallies and processions, the enforcement agencies of the state are creating obstacles, attacking the opposition leaders and activists and harassing them consistently. Police have arrested around 200 Jamaat leaders and activists from various places of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Bogra. Jessore, Narshingdi, Kishorganj, B-Baria, Barguna and Bhola. Police also ransacked and vandalised the Jamaat leader's houses during this raid.

Police has obstructed BNP's democratic programmes today and attacked the BNP leaders and activists mercilessly. Police's attacks left hundreds of activists injured. Police's attack on BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Aman Ullah Aman is shameful and condemnable. The government has planned to foil the opposition party's program by engaging the lae enforcers. We are vehemently condemning government's attacks, obstruction, mass arrest, harassing and repressing activities.

The entire nation is united now against the government. The authorities cannot subdue the ongoing movement by continuing oppression, arrest drives and crackdown. We are urging the government to stop such aggressive activities and to stepdown immediately. They must dissolve the parliament and establish a caretaker government. We are calling upon the authorities to hand over power to that caretaker government in order to hold a free, fair, credible and participatory election and also to release all detained leaders and activists of the opposition parties including Jamaat-e-Islami's Ameer immediately.
