Sylhet administration denies Jamaat’s appeal to hold rallies

Acting Ameer condemns; urges to ensure rights of holding processions and rallies

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 21st July 2023 condemning the authority’s denil of not allowing Sylhet city Jamaat-e-Islami to hold its pre-declared mass rally.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Sylhet city had applied earlier seeking administrative addistance to hold rally in Sylhet registry ground. But without making any cooperation, they rather caused obstruction and arrested 7 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir. Additional polices were deployed around the venue. Later, Sylhet city Jamaat again applied to hold rallies on the same ground on 21st July. But instead of providing assistance, Sylhet metropolitan police deployed huge policemen around the city and created a panic environment.

Just couple of months are left for holding national election. But no congenial environment for election has been created so far. It is the constitutionally guaranteed rights of every political party to hold processions. But Jamaat is denied to do so. Jamaat’s offices around the country are also closed and confined for years.

To create a favorable atmosphere for holding a free, fair and credible election, I am urging the government to restore a caretaker government system and also to provide assistance to facilitate Jamaat’s pre-declared processions and rallies.
