A meeting of the Central Executive Committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was held with party’s Acting Ameer and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. The meeting adopted the following proposals condemning the recent chaotic political situation and the obstruction and attack on the processions and rallies of the opposition parties.
“Next parliamentary election is going to be held within 5 months. But at this moment, instead of creating a congenial atmosphere for holding a free, fair and credible election, the government is pushing the nation towards political violence and turmoil. The government is not allowing the opposition to speak out. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Sylhet city and Chittagong city had applied to the administration seeking assistance to hold peaceful programs and rallies. But paying no heed to the constitutional rights of the political parties, the government denied to give permission to Sylhet city Jamaat for holding rallies on 15th July and sent 7 arrested city leaders and activists to jail. Chittagong city administration also published news in the media citing that they will not allow Jamaat to hold rallies on 22nd July as well. City police is carrying raid to the house of Jamaat leaders and arrested them consequently.
Central Executive Committee is observing that Awami goons have attacked an opponent candidate mercilessly. Just couple of months before the national election such an attack on the electoral candidate, creating obstruction and disallowing opposition to speak out proves that fair election is not possible under this regime. In the by-election of 17th July, only 11 percent votes were casted. It also demonstrates that the people are not interested to take part in an election under this regime. Awami League and Chhatra League cadres also attacked on the peaceful march program organized by BNP. Executive committee condemns all these incidents. The government is mulling to create a volatile situation as they are eager to hold another farcical election like 2014 and 2018 just to come back to the office.
Jamaat’s Central Executive Committee is of the view that the people will not participate in any election if the voting rights of the people is not ensured through the restoration of the caretaker government system.
Central Executive Committee urges the government to avoid the path of conspiracy and to establish a caretaker government and let Jamaat-e-Islami and other opposition parties to exercise the constitutionally guaranteed rights of holding rallies, meetings and processions.
