Central Executive committee of Jamaat-e-Islami proposes to restore caretaker government system for holding a free, fair and credible election

-Professor Mujibur Rahman

*Awami League has destroyed country’s electoral system completely

*EU, USA, UK and other democratic nations want to see a credible and participatory election in Bangladesh

A meeting of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s central executive committee was held with party’s Acting Ameer and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. The meeting analyzed the latest political situation of the country and adopted following proposals to restore caretaker government system to ensure a free, fair and credible election.

“The people of Bangladesh are looking forward to 12th national election. The countrymen could not cast their votes in last 15 years. Ruling Awami League has destroyed the electoral system. The government through their activities in last 15 years proved that, fair election is not possible under a political government. All stakeholders realized the importance of caretaker government system for holding a fair election and pressed their demand to hold next election under the caretaker government. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been reiterating since the beginning that there is no alternative of a caretaker government for holding a free, fair and credible election.

European Union, United States and United Kingdom and other democratic nations are insisting to take effective measures for holding a fair and credible election. The United Nations and different other international agencies also making the same recommendations.

Already, the delegations of various different countries of the world have talked to the government and other sections to hold a free, fair and inclusive election. However, the government, paying no heed to the public view, are mulling conspiracies to hold another unilateral election. The countrymen will not allow the government to hold any such farcical election. All parties and the people are committed and determined to hold a fair election this time.

Central executive committee have been observing that the government, instead of ensuring voting rights, are continuing their repression, torture and intimidation. Even after granting bail from the High Court, the authority has kept Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Maulana Shamsul Islam, Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, central executive committee member and Dhaka north city Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin, and central Majlish-e-Shura member and former MP Shahjahan Chowdhury detained inside the prison. The government is violating human rights as these leaders are being re-arrested from the jail gate even after attaining bails. Such activities of the government are barriers for a credible election. Jamaat’s central executive committee is urging to stop all these repressive activities immediately.

Central Executive committee thinks, initiatives must be taken to hold free, fair and credible election and also to restore voting rights through a caretaker government. Awami League should not push the nation towards anarchy and violence. To save the nation from political stalemate, they must avoid stubborn attitude and accept the public demand of reinstating caretaker government system, opines the central executive committee.
