Jamaat Ameer commemorates the victims of the 28th October attack and declares fresh program

-Dr. Shafiqur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman issued a statement on October 26, 2025 commemorating the victims of the brutal attack and mayhem on October 28 of 2006 and announced the related programs:

In the statement, he said, “With the aim of disrupting the 2006 national parliamentary elections, following the completion of the four-party coalition government’s term, on October 28, 2006 the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League unleashed a wave of arson, vandalism and attacks across the country. On that day, under the initiative of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, a public rally was organized at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram. From morning, the construction of the stage was underway. Suddenly, terrorists affiliated with the 14-party alliance launched severe attack across the Paltan area on Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir leaders, workers, and ordinary citizens with incendiary sticks, iron rods, and various firearms.”

He further stated, “When the central leaders of Jamaat began their speeches, the 14-party terrorists advanced toward the rally, shooting from all sides. The chief guest at the rally was the then Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and Minister of Industries, Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami (R.). Attacking the participants and central leaders at the rally was the main objective of those hooligans. From morning until evening, the Paltan area was turned into a blood-soaked ground by the terror of the Awami goons.”

He said, “As a result of their attacks, 14 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir were martyred in Dhaka and across the country, and thousands were injured. Not only in Dhaka but across the nation, the 14-party terrorists carried out attacks, creating extreme anarchy. Awami League terrorists killed people and danced over the corpses, celebrating in brutal joy—an event widely covered by global media. This was a premeditated, anti-human genocide.”

He added, “The killings, terrorism, and anarchy of October 28, 2006 will remain a shameful chapter in the political history of Bangladesh. Following that day, they initiated terrorist politics in the country, which continued until August 5, 2024. Since then, a process began to depoliticize the country. In continuation of this, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, justice, freedom of speech, voting rights, and all other rights of the people were systematically stripped away.”

He further stated, “Specific cases were filed to bring the killers of the horrific October 28 massacre to justice. However, the then government withdrew these cases, blocking the path to justice and protecting the killers. On August 5, the country was freed from fascism through the united, intense movement of students and the public. We believe that this change will establish justice in the country and that the perpetrators of the October 28 killings will be immediately brought to justice. The people of Bangladesh demand that the cases filed against the killers of 28th October be immediately reopened, and their arrest and punishment ensured.”

“I pray to Almighty Allah to accept those who were killed on October 28, 2006 as martyrs. I also express my deep condolences to the families of those who were injured or disabled and are still living a life of suffering.”
