Urges Indian authority to repeal the controversial act

More than 50 people killed in violence over the citizenship act in India; Jamaat Ameer expresses concern

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 26 February, 2020 expressing deep concern over the existing anarchy and violent situation in India’s capital New Delhi centering the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which left at least 50 people killed and several hundreds more injured.

“In last couple of days, severe violent situation has been created in different places of India centering the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Earlier, huge reaction and repercussion were created in different states of India which had caused violence as well. More than hundred petitions have been submitted in the Supreme Court of India pressing objection about this controversial act. Different international organizations and forums including United Nations, OIC and human rights organizations like Amnesty International, European Parliament and different other democratic countries also expressed their concern and urged the Indian authority to resolve the prevailing crisis.

On behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, we had urged the Indian government to repeal this act earlier. We have been observing with great concern that, this CAA has originated chaos and violence in different parts across India. Since December 2019, more than 50 people have been killed and several hundreds became injured. Police and para-military forces have been deployed in different places to tackle further untoward situation. According to Indian Express, the situation may turn more volatile. Concerned quarters also recommended to deploy army across the country. Section 144 has been imposed in the North-Eastern part of the capital Delhi. We are extending our deep sympathy to the families and relatives of the victims who have been killed so far in this violence. We are also expecting that the injured people will get proper treatment to attain quick recovery.

The Citizenship Amendment Act has destabilized the situation in India. Like others, being the citizens of the neighboring country, we are expecting that the central government of India will repeal the controversial CAA in order to restore peace, stability and congenial atmosphere nationwide.
