Landslide triggered by rain kills 65 in hilly areas; Jamaat Ameer expresses concern

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maqbul Ahmad has issued the following statement on 13th June, 2017 expressing deep concern as at least 65 people including one Major and One Military Captain have been killed in landslide in Chittagong, Bandarban and Rangamati, followed by daylong downpour that was influenced by a depression in the Bay.

Huge casualties have taken place in the hilly districts as at least 65 people including one Major and One Military Captain have been killed in landslide followed by daylong downpour. This is really a painful and shocking incident.

To avoid such a mishap, the houses and establishments of the locals, who are living in slopes, should have been displaced immediate after the met office warning. Rest of the residents, who are still over there, must be rehabilitated.

I am urging the concerned authorities to pay due compensation to the victim families, who have been killed in this accident. Besides, I am calling upon to rescue the entrapped peoples and also to ensure medical treatment of the injured. Finally, I am praying for the salvation of the departed souls and extending deep sympathy to their mournful families.”
