Narayanganj district’s elected Vice Chairman arrested; Hamidur Rahman Azad demands immediate release

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has issued the following statement on 16th May, 2017 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Narayanganj district’s Bandar Upazila’s Vice Chairman Saiful Islam Bhuiyan.

“Mr. Saiful Islam Bhuiyan is an elected Vice Chairman. Police has arrested him just to deprive the people of the Bandar Upazila from getting his service. He is completely innocent.

As a part of the conspiracy of destroying the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami, the government is arresting the popular leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different places and causing great sufferings and harassment to them. Mr. Saiful Islam Bhuiyan is a popular leader. He has been arrested as the authority became envious of his popularity.

The government’s popularity is going down rampantly for its continuous torture and repression. The government is continuing this crackdown just to stay in power forcefully. Even the elected representatives are not spared from the oppression of the government. I am calling upon the countrymen to raise voice against such repression of the government.

Finally I am urging the authorities concerned to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Narayanganj district’s Bandar Upazila’s Vice Chairman Saiful Islam Bhuiyan immediately.”
