Namaj-e-Janaja of Jamaat-e-Islami’s former central Majlish-e-Shura member, former lawmaker, for district Ameer of Satkhira, noted religious scholar, social worker and veteran leader Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol held in Satkhira on 21st July afternoon. Hundreds of thousands of people attended the Janaja. Following the Janaja, he was buried at his family graveyard located in Boikari village under Sadar Upazila of Satkhira district.

Prior to the Janaja, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim, central executive committee member Principal Md. Ijjat Ullah, central organizing secretary and Khulna region’s coordinator Muhaddith Abdul Khaleq, central working committee member and Sramik Kollan Federation’s central vice-president Master Shafiqul Alam, Khulna city Jamaat’s former Ameer Abul Kalam Azad, Satkhira district Jamaat Ameer Muhaddith Rabiul Bashar, Nayeb-e-Ameer Professor Shahidul Islam Mukul, Sheikh Nurul Huda, district secretary Azizur Rahman, Advocate Abdus Subhan Mukul, city Chhatrashibir president Shimul Hossain, Sadar Jamaat Ameer Maulana Shahadath Hossain, Shamnagar Upazila Jamaat Ameer Professor Abdur Rahman, Kazi Siddiqur Rahman and many others spoke on the occasion remembering the memories of their great leader.

People of different parties and factions also attended the Namaj-e-Janaja. The entire district was in mourn when the dead body of late Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol arrived on the spot. People burst into tears after getting a chance to see him for the last time.

Addressing the gathering Maulana Abdul Halim said Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol has died because of the torture and repression of the government. May Allah accept him as a martyr. He was a renowned religious scholar, an elected public representative and a practicing man of healthy conversation. Right now, hundreds of thousands of people are crying for their beloved leader. The presence of this huge gathering demonstrated that what kind of man Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol was.

Who is this Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol? Why did the government target him?
28 February 2013. The day of declaring verdict in the case of Allama Delwar Hossain Sayedee. Protesting the perverse verdict, people across the country came to the street. Thousands of people took part in demonstration in Satkhira. Immediate after the declaration of the verdict, a procession was brought out from Kodomtola intersection of the town and proceeded toward the city. The members of the joint forces obstructed the procession at one point. When the demonstrators tried to make entry to the city, police opened fire as per the instruction of the magistrate. As a result, 6 Jamaat leaders and activists were killed on the spot. Jamaat consequently declared strike at a stretch. The whole district of Satkhira became confined. Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol was the district Ameer during those days. So, he became the target as the authority was desperate to foil the movement. Initially, he could avoid the arrest drive and continued the movement. But finally, the law enforcement agencies arrested him in 2015. Later, he was shown arrested in a case of crimes against humanity. The tribunal began the trial process by framing charges against him on 5 March of 2018. The tribunal awarded him with death penalty on 24th March of 2022. He was inside the prison since then. He finally died in Khulna 250 beds medical hospital on 20th July evening. He hailed from Boikari village of Sadar Upazila under Satkhira district.

Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol became parliament member from Satkhira Sadar constituency. Earlier, he had been elected as the chairman of the Sadar Upazila. Prior to become Upazila chairman, he had been elected as the chairman of Boikari union. In his professional career, he discharged duties as the principal of Satkhira Agardari Kamil Madrasa.

The allegations of crimes against humanity including murder, rape, abduction and detention were brought against Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol. The tribunal awarded death penalty against him for these offences. The entire nation became agitated.

But different investigation committee and probe commissions, which had been formed after the liberation war could not mention his name in the documents. Till the formation of the tribunal, no case or GD was filed against him in connection with the same charges.

Principal Abdul Gaffar is the eldest son-in-law of Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol is the incumbent union council chairman of Kushkhali. He claimed that his father-in-law was a great human being. He was known to the people of all classes in Satkhira. He was by the side of the people in season and out of season. Because of the love for his father-in-law, the local people also elected him as Union chairman.

Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol was a genius and extra-ordinary talented person. He was the spiritual leader and the living legend of the Islamic movement. In his personal life, he led a very simple life and maintained a noble personality. Though he was elected as public representatives for multiple occasions, but his living houses is in a dilapidated condition.

The local people added that Principal Maulana Abdul Khaleq Mondol is a leader beyond controversy. He was the elected Union chairman, Upazila chairman and the parliament member. He was an outstanding student. He stood first class in all examinations of his student life. While he was inside the prison, he memorized the entire Quran. In the Pakistani period, he obtained gold medal during the reign of filed martial Aiyub Khan. The people of Satkhira love him and will continue to love him with passionately.
