Acting Secretary General lambasts government for their obstruction and arrest drive during Wednesday’s peaceful strike
Wednesday, 31st August, 2016

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 31st August, 2016 protesting the police obstruction and arrest of several leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir during the nationwide peaceful dawn to dusk strike which has been called protesting against the government’s conspiracy to kill party’s central executive committee member Mir Quasem Ali and demanding the release of all detained leaders.

“It is the democratic right of the citizen to declare and observe peaceful general strike. But by obstructing the strike and arresting party leaders and activists during today’s Jamaat called peaceful strike, the government has foiled the democratic rights of the citizen and thus they have violated the domestic law and the constitution.

Police has unlawfully arrested Sylhet district’s Kompanyganj Upazila Jamaat’s Secretary Foijur Rahman on last 30th August. During today’s strike, police has similar unlawfully arrested 3 Jamaat activists from Boroigram of the Nator district, 6 from Rangpur, 2 Islami Chhatrashibir men from Mymensingh and 5 Shibir activists from Comilla.

The government has spontaneously observed today’s nationwide strike peacefully ignoring the government’s threat, intimidation and arrest drive. I am congratulating the countrymen to observe the strike peacefully. The government has exposed its fascist face once again by obstructing the strike and arresting party leaders and activists. By imposing a tyrannical rule and detaining the opposition men, no government could stay in office for long and in the same way; this government will not be able to hold its office. Now time has come to take a stand against the fascist rule of the incumbent government.

I am urging the authority to release all the innocent leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir who have been arrested from Sylhet, Nator, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Comilla districts.”
