Nationwide arrest drive continues against Jamaat activists; Hamidur Rahman Azad protests
Sunday, 14th August, 2016

Central Executive Committee member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has issued the following statement on 14th August, 2016 protesting the unjust arrest of Bogra east organizational district’s Shahjahanpur Upazila Ameer an Majhira Union council chairman Maulana Abdus Salam and similar unlawful arrest of 9 Jamaat leaders and activists from Chandpur district’s Motlob South unit Ameer Abdur Rashid Patwary and secretary Maulana Omar Faruq.

“The government is conducting massive arrest drive against the Jamaat leaders and activists across the country in order to prolong its tyrannical rule. Even the elected public representatives are not spared from the government’s suppression.

As a part of the same strategy, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Bogra east organizational district’s Shahjahanpur Upazila Ameer an Majhira Union council chairman Maulana Abdus Salam has been arrested today while entering into the oath taking ceremony as the UP Chairman.  Subsequently he was not allowed to take oath. It should be mentioned here that Maulana Abdus Salam has been elected Union Council Chairman for 4th times. By arresting such a popular man, the government has committed severe injustice to him.

In another move, police have arrested  9 Jamaat leaders and activists from Chandpur including district’s Motlob South unit Ameer Abdur Rashid Patwary and secretary Maulana Omar Faruq without any specific charge. The law enforcers have arrested them as a part of political harassment.

In this backdrop, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Bogra district’s Shahjahanpur Upazila Jamaat Ameer and Majhira Union council chairman Maulana Abdus Salam and Chandpur district’s Motlob south Upazila Ameer Abdur Rashid Patwary immediately.”
