Acting Secretary General appreciates countrymen for observing strike peacefully; criticizes police’s obstruction and detention
Monday, 05th September, 2016

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 5th September, 2016 appreciating the countrymen for observing the peaceful strike which has been declared by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting against the unjust execution of party’s central executive committee member, noted Islamic economist and social worker Shaheed Mir Quasem Ali.

“The government has committed serious offence by obstructing peaceful strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami and detaining the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir. I am condemning such undemocratic attitudes and activities of the government.

It is the fundamental rights of the citizen to call and observe peaceful strike. Government cannot obstruct these citizen rights. The countrymen has protested against the execution of Shaheed Mir Quasem in connection with a false and conspiracy case filed by the government ignoring the authority’s obstruction, arrest drive and threats.

During today’s strike, police has arrested Nator district’s Noldanga Upazila vice chairman and district unit Jamaat’s working committee member lecturer Ziaul Haque and his aged father Maulana Younus Ali, Rangpur district’s Bodorganj municipality  Jamaat Ameer Sirajul Islam and 17 other party activists, 5 workers from Laksham of the Comilla district, Norail district Islami Chhatrashibir secretary Rafiqul Islam and 3 others unlawfully in order to hamper the strike. The law enforcers also arrested many other activists of Jamaat and Chhatrashibir from different places across the country. By continuing such indiscriminate drive, the government has turned this country into a police state, which is not acceptable at all.

Finally I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir including Nator district’s Noldanga Upazila vice chairman immediately.”
