Acting Secretary General urges government to stop ongoing arrest drive and to release the innocent peoples
Wednesday, 15th June, 2016

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 15th June, 2016 condemning the indiscriminate arrest of the Jamaat and Chhatrashibir leaders and activists in the ongoing massive arrest drive which has been continuing for last couple of days in the name of arresting the militants.

“The government in last 5 days arrested more than 14 thousand people including the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir during a massive drive in line with the excuse of arresting the militants, which is completely inhuman and unlawful.

The government has filled up the prisons nationwide by arresting the opposition activists particularly the leaders and workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir unlawfully. The government is arresting the Jamaat-Shibir men on target basis and already arrested thousands of Jamaat-Shibir activists and supporters across the country. Right now, there are 68 prisons nationwide with the capacity of 34, 681 prisoners. But to the latest, more than 76 thousands of people are residing inside these jails. These prisoners do not get due food, water and medical treatment. They even cannot use their toilets and bathrooms. We came to know that due to limited space, many prisoners are miserably passing nights sitting in the toilets. In this current severe hot season of June, these prisoners are forced to lead a deplorable life. As a result the prisons are experiencing humanitarian crisis.

The law enforcers are claiming that amidst the 14 thousands of detainees of the ongoing drives, they found 119 militants. If they really became capable to find out 119 militants, then why they are sending rest of the thousands of prisoners to the jail?

Most of the Muslim majority countries are assisting the Muslims in fasting in various ways and preserving the sanctity of this holy month. Even in those countries, where Muslims are not the majority, the authority extends support to the fasting Muslims and show respect towards them. But being a Muslim majority country, the government of Bangladesh is not only assisting the Muslims rather it is conducting a massive arrest drive to harass the general Muslims. They are sending pious and innocent Muslims into the prison and foiling the holiness of this month. Due to such arrest, the families of the detainees are observing this Ramadan in a melancholy mood along with severe panic and tensions. I am urging the concerned authorities to show respect for Ramadan and to stop the ongoing arrest drive immediately.

The ongoing arrest drive caused severe resentment among the general masses. I am calling upon the countrymen to raise voice against these autocratic steps of the government. For the sake of the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, I am also asking the authorities to release all the innocent detainees including the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir immediately.
