Acting Secretary General calls to cancel coal based power plant in Rampal due to its disastrous impact on the Sundarbans
Wednesday, 13th July, 2016

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 13th July, 2016 urging to cancel coal based power plant in Rampal and to undertake scientific planning to protect Sundarbans.

“The people of Bangladesh, particularly the residents of the Sundarbans area are deeply concerned over the accord which has been signed on last 12th July to set up a coal based power plant in Rampal.

Due to the construction of coal based power plant in Rampal, which is just 14 kilometer away from the Sundarbans, will cause disastrous impact on the natural beauties and biodiversity, trees and animals. Natural ecology will be devastated if the Sundarbans are being destroyed fully. This is why; the concerned people of the country, different political parties, environmentalist organizations and forums, environment experts and civil societies have been protesting for days against this controversial establishment.

But paying no heed to those demands, the government has signed the accord, which is completely contradictory to the national interest. The environment department still did not give the green signal for this project. Without their approval, how the government moved for materializing this project, it is not clear to the countrymen. The people will never accept such suicidal decision. If the government is not refrained from executing such unjust and suicidal decision, a big portion of the country’s South-Western region would be under environmental threat.

I am urging the concerned people, different political parties, environmentalist organizations and forums, environment experts and civil societies to raise voice against the suicidal decision of the government of setting a coal based power plant in Rampal.”
