Jamaat-e-Islami declares programs protesting death penalty of Maulana Nizami; strike on Sunday; peaceful demonstration on Saturday and Prayer program on Friday
Thursday, 05th May, 2016

Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maqbul Ahmed and party’s Acting Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman have jointly issued a statement on 5th May, 2016 declaring the following programs protesting against the conspiracy of murdering Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer, former minister, renowned Islamic thinker and one of the top leaders of the 20 party alliances Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami in a pre-planned way.

“Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami is the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He is a veteran parliamentarian, world renowned religious scholar, Islamic thinkers, a decent political figure and one of the top leaders of the 20 party alliances. The government had filed false case against Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami in line with the so called allegation of crimes against humanity in a bid to make Jamaat-e-Islami a leaderless party. The allegations which have been raised against him are completely baseless, false, concocted and fictitious. To refute these bogus allegations, 3 freedom fighters of the Pabna district including a freedom fighter commander spontaneously placed testimony before the tribunal saying that Maulana Nizami had no connection with the allegations brought against him. Despite these strong evidences, Maulana Nizami’s death penalty has been upheld which have surprised and shocked the countrymen. Maulana Nizami has been deprived from justice.

The government has adopted plans to kill Maulana Nizami in the name of trying so called crimes against humanity in order to attain their ill political interest. Since the beginning of this trial, the government has carried out different efforts to influence the trial procedure.

During an official trip in Egypt in 2013, the then Home Minister delivered an address fixing the date of verdict in case of Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Abdul Quader Molla. The ministers and ruling party leaders also repeatedly announced to hang Jamaat leaders Nizami, Mujahid and Sayedee. After the establishment of the ‘Gana Jagaran Mancha’ (A youth platform) in Shahbagh under the government’s patronization, the government called upon the justices to deliver verdict considering the demand of this controversial youth platform. The unlawful, illogical, unjust and politically motivated naked interference became apparent during the entire trial process.

Such directives and address of the Prime Minister clearly demonstrates that just to gain ill political interest, the government is murdering one after one Jamaat leaders ignoring and rejecting the call of the local and international concerned quarters, human rights organizations including the United Nations.

By murdering Maulana Nizami, the government does not want to make Jamaat-e-Islami leaderless only but also want to make the nation deprived from democratic national leadership. We firmly believe that Islamic ideology cannot be eliminated by killing its leaders one by one. The leaders and activists of the Islamic movement will taken the revenge of these unjust executions not by murder rather by implementing the Islamic ideologies in this country. The nation wants to see the government’s good sense and they want to receive Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami as a free leader. To meet that demand, we are declaring the following programs:

1.    Countrywide prayer program to be held tomorrow, 6th May

2.    Nationwide peaceful demonstration on 7th May, Saturday

3.    Countrywide general strike from 8th May, Sunday 6m to 9th May Monday 6am for 24 hours

We are urging all the units and wings of Jamaat-e-Islami to observe the declared programs with due patience and having full trust and confidence upon Almighty Allah. We are also seeking the assistance of the countrymen and people of all walks including farmers, labors, students, teachers, intellectuals and thinkers, civil society members, religious leaders and different other professionals to make the declared program successful.”
