Unprecedented irregularities in 5th phase of Union council elections; 9 people killed in electoral violence; Hamidur Rahman Azad condemns
Saturday, 28th May, 2016
Central Executive Committee member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has issued the following statement on 28th May, 2016 protesting and condemning the massive irregularities including ballot hijacking, bombing and violence to kill opposition activists in order to secure the ruling party candidates during today’s 5th phase of Union Council election which held in 717 Unions.

“Today’s 5th phase of Union council election has been held amid more violence and rigging than the previous phases. Before the vote casting begins, 4 people killed in electoral violence across the country. Opposition candidate Kamal Uddin was brutally killed in a terror attack in Bolorampur Union of the Titas Upazila under Comilla district. 4 men killed in Jamalpur district’s Dewanganj Upazila as ruling party cadres opened bullet fire. Another man killed in electoral violence in Raiganj Union of the Begumganj Upazula of the Noakhali district. In total 9 men were killed and hundreds of people became injured.

Prior to the vote casting hour, the ruling party terrorists hijacked the ballot boxes in Begumganj of the Noakhali district. 3 men became bullet reddened in 3 number ward of the Sarowartoli union of the Boalkhali Upazila of Chittagong district. Centering an incident of capturing a poll center in Satani union of the Titas Upazila of the Comilla district, 5 men got bullet injuries and 50 others became wounded. All the polling agents of the opposition candidates were forcefully moved out from the center and subsequently the ruling party cadres casted fake votes for boat (party symbol) in broad day light. Awami terrorists also casted fake votes openly in Khagkanda union of the Aaraihajar Upazila of the Narayanganj district. 55 UP members and chairman have been elected uncontested in Dagonbhuiyan of the Feni district.

The opposition candidates boycotted polls in Homna Upazila of the Comilla district raising the allegation of severe irregularities. The opposition boycotted the polls for similar cause in 3 unions of the Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila. So the overall situation clarifies that, free and fair election did not take place anywhere of the country. In everywhere, the terrorists have secured the victory of the ruling party candidates by rigging and violence.

The law enforcers and the election officials have assisted the Awami hooligans to carry misdeeds and irregularities. The present government has destroyed the election system as a whole. Such a violence, terrorism, rigging and intimidation are unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh.

The subservient election commission has assisted the government to execute their blueprint design. This time, it has been proved again that the current government and its obedient election commission would not be able to hold a free, fair and credible election at all.

I am urging the concerned authorities to cancel polls in those centers which witnessed unprecedented terrorism, violence, vote rigging, fake voting and capturing poll centers and to hold re-election in those unions.”
